A Homeschooling Writer’s Journey

Here’s a little history learning in action with a project based approach to home education.

As someone who never liked the subject of history in school… I’m actually happy to be able to share this… as facilitating it with our daughter, has shown me how fascinating it can actually be.

Which is what inspired me to share. Within this post is also a review of a (specific to history) curriculum… which contrary to popular opinion, can be incorporated into a natural learning journey (evidently).

🌿

Following our interests early, rather than waiting until we get to the University age, gives us a lot more time to hone in and dive deep into our inner sources of inspiration.

What a gift to honour our unique purpose and design! We were all made so beautifully different! Home/ Unschooling allows us to be respectful of this fact.

This is what I love about it! Our 8 (nearly 9) year old just wrote a book on the Ancient World, following her natural organic curiosity of History. I don’t know where it came from (certainly not me)… BUT were riding the wave!

When we follow our hearts and encourage our young to do the same, love guides them to focus and explore. I really love the way Home / Unschooling allows families to give room to children to grow what branches they wish (in their own time much like a tree) by following their own light!

It really inspires me! Hope you find this inspiring too!

Our eldest daughter who is 8 (turning 9) has just completed writing her first book! As Authors ourselves we are thrilled for her. We have watched her joy of writing thrive with our encouragement and support and to wrap it up in a book about what interests her is something special.

Prior to this, she has been filling Scrapbook Journals with our homeschooling (life) adventures which has been a wonderful reflection tool over these last few years! Boy the time flies doesn’t it!

So, this is more of a Main Lesson style / inspired project, based on our daughters interest of History, that we’ve seen flourish with time naturally.

It all began with our nature walks at our local wetlands and the educational information boards along the boardwalk and the surrounds.

With her endless questions about ancient and indigenous people… we simply went with the flow and watched her interest from there grow. It’s really just been a snowball.

Now, we have used the Story of the World curriculum to satiate her thirst, on the recommendation from a friend.

So, this little scrapbook style learning diary has become a book on the Ancient World! It’s been written with love and joy. We have combined the Waldorf / Steiner approach with the story-art -main lesson rhythm in our World Story read aloud series with this. It’s been really fun and our 5 year old has been soaking it all up along with her big sister!

As for me… I never enjoyed “History” before! But going along with the curiosity of our daughter has drawn me right in! I’m learning more than I ever did through school and adulthood in terms of history! And I truly love the fact that we are doing it together! I’ve been alongside our daughter, doing the art with her, guiding her with techniques and tutorials in art (one of my loves).

So with many of art pieces she has done, I’ve sat by her doing one myself. Kind of like Kids Art Hub style teaching. It’s been a a lot of fun! We’ll plan a piece and look up an art piece on the web on the particular “subject” we are studying at the time… and seek inspiration from there. Then we set off on a decided project or she will simply explore and decide for herself alone.

Just thought I’de leave this here and mark a moment of fulfilment in our home education journey. I know sometimes it helps to see others in action… to get a feel for how it looks like in application, whichever style of homeschooling we choose or practice. So… this is what it looks like for us. Hope you find it food for thought or even just enjoyable to read.

I know I love reading others home ed journeys. Even if it’s just to be a fly on the wall sometimes. So thanks for being here and meeting us where we are at:) You can read her book on The Ancient World here!
