One thing learned well in school is repression. To sit on the natural urges of movement, curiosities, play, fun, research and interaction.
You simply can’t. A “certified expert authority” is talking at you and you must listen. No matter what’s going on at home. You can’t share what’s on your mind… in class at all. It’s not woven into the curriculum because we… are not important enough. We are supposed to be coggs in the wheel of the greater good of social constructs.
We learn to bottle it up to be a “good student”. Essentially we learn how to be good students. Not necessarily learners. We learn to be obedient or there will be shame.. So we silence ourselves because we are trained to do so.
So we grow up and find sharing our feelings and thoughts a great challenge. We learn that our own inner wisdom is disregarded and our creativity becomes stifled because we are hardly ever permitted to use it to it’s fullest potential. It’s only in the confines of a given assignment subject, that we may select from maybe 2 options if that.
We learn that our physical freedom and needs are not important, so we don’t learn the importance of physical strength and fitness beyond a weekly game outside half spent rallying the crowd. We’ve forgotten the importance of peak performance, once used to get our species here where we are today, thousands of years through time.
Our health in every way is declining because of it. We’ve never had so much disease! We don’t even think about our environment because we just accept authority because that’s what we’ve been trained to do. The building regulators will have thought about our health for us.
The chemicals in the building materials won’t be harmful because “standards” … like those used on school testing and assessments… are used right? Or do we even ask? Because in school, we are simply “told”.
We do exactly as we are told… because that’s what we had to do to get good “grades” for our whole childhood, minus a seasonal holiday to see our families for a taste of real life.
We don’t know how to feed ourselves with proper nutrition because we get our packed lunches or canteen food and are hardly ever involved in its preparation or even the process of growing or buying it.
We are schooled to do “other more important things” so eating well is not even on our minds. We haven’t been home enough to watch our parents make food and cook meals, and when we are, we are too busy with homework… so we’re again, not involved!
So we grow up to outsource this and pay for overpriced, frozen, deep fried fast and packaged foods… because we’re too busy getting qualified.. Spending the majority of our lives in schools or sit down jobs where community sufficiency is a thing of the past.
It’s a fast paced world and we’re told we have to keep up. Keep up with the Jones’, the news, the “top students”, get A’s all the time in every subject, even if it bores us.
We are told to forget about our unrealistic goals to simply excel in our area of passion… because we need to be “well rounded”, knowing only surface level “facts and trivia” about the 8 “decided subjects”… with little to no relevance to your personal life, potential or interests.
After all… how could we possibly learn all the required skills for success if we focus on one thing that really matters to us? I mean, Art doesn’t teach us fractions, estimation, history or especially English! I mean… If you love art so much, why would you then read about your favourite Artists and develop language around your passion?
You will never learn English and Language if you only love and pursue Art right? You’ll never learn Maths skills like size, proportion, angles, shapes and geometry through making Art! That’s impossible!
It’s crazy! You’ll never get an “education” if you focus on what you love! Right? Or wrong? Something to think about I suppose.
