Tracking the Learning as Unschoolers

A friend of mine who has the Homeschooling Littles Australia group, just posting a great question which inspired this post.

My answer to the question about how unschoolers specifically track or journal learning was:

“I have a few things. But all over the shop but to name a few… I use 23snaps app for more bulk private photo uploads, the Keptme app is beautiful, especially going back over… makes me nearly cry looking over the special life we live! That’s what keeps me adding to it! Then there’s the Instagram and blog. Very occasionally I journal but E keeps a special memory scrapbook journal that is just awesome! I print photos for it for her. It’s so special now.”

To elaborate on that, I wanted to highlight for others and especially newer unschoolers (those not using a curriculum or seeking to replicate the school environment).

So here… I am going to share my absolute favourite ways to track learning. Firstly, there is this blog which I have consciously dedicated to such ramblings. Secondly, aside from the instagram page (Inspiration at Play)… I use the Keptme app, which was also recommended in Laura’s HLA group. I absolutely LOVE it! Recently I looked at it and almost cried at how special all the memories are and just HOW MUCH awesome stuff was recorded on there!

This is literally designed to record what learning areas of the Australian Curriculum your children are covering with their Activity Based Learning. So, you can literally record one event by uploading a photo or 2, even a collage and “checking off” ALL of the key learning areas that one activity covered!

That’s why I love it so much! PLUS…the added perk for people like me is…you get to look at what learning outcomes each “subject” has, in order to see if there is anything else you could be providing by way of learning opportunities that may interest your family. That is why I find it so fantastic!

My daughter also keeps a scrapbook journal as a memoir, which she enjoys…as her favourite things are story and art creation (besides outdoor nature play). In this journal, I print out photos for her to cut and paste and occasionally suggest things I think are really cool to ad to her journal, that she has done. It’s something we really enjoy doing together. So far this year, she has filled a whole journal with over 30 stories and is already onto her next!

We just love it!
